The mother of a Milwaukee man shot and killed by police is heading to Washington, D.C.
Maria Hamilton boarded a bus Friday, along with dozens of supporters, to lead the Million Moms March.
The march is designed to support mothers across the country who have lost children at the hands of police officers.
Dontre Hamilton died one year ago after a confrontation in Milwaukee’s Red Arrow Park.
Officer Christopher Manney was fired after Police Chief Ed Flynn determined Manney went against his training and performed an unnecessary pat down procedure. Flynn determined that pat down led to the deadly confrontation between Dontre Hamilton and Manney.
Maria Hamilton said she wants to shed light on the issue of police-involved shootings.
“My mission is to make people aware that this is a bigger problem than anybody actually thought,” she said. “Now that the doors have come open, we want the doors to stay open until things start to get fixed.”
